3-Iminohaloisoindolin-1-ones are obtained by reacting a halophthalodinitrile with ammonia and/or an organic amine, or quaternary ammonium hydroxide together with hydrogen peroxide, in a treatment medium in the form of a mixture of water and an organic solvent. The process gives end products of extremely high purity in a very high yield. The end products obtained are useful intermediates for the synthesis of high-quality organic pigments of high purity, excellent lightfastness and good thermal stability.
