Energy-converting cushion which is to be arranged between the restraint system of a vehicle and the body of the user in such a manner that the forces and accelerations occurring in the instant of an accident, and acting on the user, are reduced. In this arrangement, the force is to be transmitted by the restraint system to the body, and conversely, at points of the body which are particularly suitable therefor, local stresses and surface pressure are to be kept low, the possibility of injury by the restraint system, as a result of the fixing of parts thereof to particular parts of the body, is to be reduced and the restraint system is to be adjustable to users of various bodily weights by the additional switching on of one or more energy-converting cushions or by the switching-off of the effect thereof.
