In the production of acetylene by the partial oxidation of hydrocarbons having molecular weights in the range 60-110, the separately preheated hydrocarbon and oxygen reactants are mixed in a mixer with a residence period below 0.1 second, then passed through a gas distributing block into a reaction chamber, the velocity of the gas mixture immediately before entering the gas distributer being more than 5 metres per second, preferably more than 10 meters per second. Times and speeds relate to conditions at 0 DEG C. and 760 mm. The speed of the gases through the channels of the gas distributer is usually above 20 metres per second. Preferably a hydrogen-containing gas is added to the hydrocarbon, e.g. residual gas from the process. By introducing additional gaseous or liquid hydrocarbon into the reaction zone ethylene is also formed. The process is particularly applicable to the partial oxidation of naphthas, and the preheating temperature may be 600 DEG C.
