In methods and arrangements for locating defects (DO) on a magnetic recording medium, magnetic markings are made with the aid of the read/write head or the write head or the erase head of the recorder or drive on which playback is performed, to be precise by overwriting the recording made at the same time or previously with a new, preferably long-wave recording, or by erasing the recording made at the same time or previously, beginning or ending approximately at the moment of the disturbance by a defect to be marked. In practice, several tracks are erased or overwritten.
