The invention relates to a separating screw for conveying bottles in a labelling machine. The inlet portion of the feed screw is composed of elastic material and has a lead which corresponds to the bottle diameter, with the result that, after the release of an upstream bottle lock, the bottles are taken up in a damped manner by the first flights of the separating screw. When the sequence of bottles in the separating screw is continuous, the bottles in the inlet region support one another. The up pressure is here taken by the first flight of the acceleration portion, which is composed of rigid material.
