<p>PURPOSE:To improve the character recognizing processing, by picking up characteristic amount at wider area in the surrounding of a character pattern. CONSTITUTION:A character pattern 1 is photoelectric-converted at a scanning photoelectric converter 2, and binary-coded at a binary quantitizer by using a background density as a reference. The character pattern signal quantitized is stored in a storage device 4. An external frame detector 5 detects information of left, right, up and down side of the character pattern stored in the storage device 4. Scanning circuits 6L, 6R, 6U, and 6D determine reference lines of scanning start from the information of surrounding sides fed from the detector 5, scan the character pattern stored in the storage device 4 toward the direction of pattern center sequentially and total sum of the scanning line length corresponding to each circumscribed side, i.e., the background region is derived. Further, and the center of gravity is derived from the center of gravity calculating sections 7L, 7R, 7U and 7D, and after normalizing them, the information is fed to a characteristic comparator 8 as characteristic information of the surrounding of the input character pattern by arranging the information.</p> |
