The invention relates to a process for working the soil between cultivated plants grown in a row, such as, for example, in vineyard systems, orchards and the like, by means of a soil-working appliance which is attached to a tractor and of which the rotating working implements in the form of cutting stars, disks or the like can shift away from the plants or other obstacles by means of an associated fender. The process is characterised in that the driven rotating working implements (14), the relative speed of which is set higher than the speed of the tractor, automatically move, as a result of their contact with the ground, out of their initial position into the working position between the plants and remain in this position until the fender (24) butting against a plant pivots the working implements (14) backwards, and in that, after the appliance has moved round this plant, the working implements (14) run automatically into their working position directly again. <IMAGE>
