To detect material fatigue in a solid (1) use is made of a system (6) in which the body (1) is provided with a sensor (7) which detects the variation in deformation and whose electrical output signals are recorded during a cyclic standard loading operation performed on the body (1) and are compared with calibrated measurements in an evaluation device (12). Preferably, the mechanical stress and the electrical measurements which are proportional to the strain produced thereby are recorded in a coordinate system of a measuring instrument and compared with a sequence of hysteresis diagrams (b) which characterise the service life of the solid (1). <IMAGE>
