Each element of a packing fora gas-liq. contact columns has a curved or polygonal base extending through 90-270 degrees around an imaginary axis. The cross-section through each element in a radial plane through the axis that of a trough and there are one or more openings in the base. The ratio of length to depth of the trough is greater than 6 : 1 and/or the ratio fo length to breadth is equal to or greater than 3 : 1. The packing has a low gas press. drop in relation to its mass transfer characteristics. The packing elements are substantially free from the defects of hooking into or stacking uniformly against one another when randomly dumped.
