Succinimide derivatives representable by the following formula:

<Chemistry id="chema02" num="0002"><Image id="ia02" he="21" wi="22" file="IMGA0002.TIF" imgContent="chem" imgFormat="TIFF" inline="no" /></Chemistry>(wherein A is an oxygen atom, a methylene group or an ethylene group and a full line accompanying a broken line (<Image id="ia03" he="3" wi="4" file="IMGA0003.TIF" imgContent="character" imgFormat="TIFF" inline="yes" />) is a single bond or a double bond) and Z is a hydrogen atom or, X and Z are combined to form a group of the formula:
<Chemistry id="chema03" num="0003"><Image id="ia04" he="20" wi="22" file="IMGA0004.TIF" imgContent="chem" imgFormat="TIFF" inline="no" /></Chemistry>(wherein A and a full line are each as defined above) and Y is a hydrogen atom, R is a phenyl group, optionally substituted with halogen, C<Sub>1</Sub>-C<Sub>4</Sub> alkyl, C<Sub>l</Sub>-C<Sub>4</Sub> alkoxy or trifluoromethyl, a 2-pyridyl group or a 2-pyrimidinyl group and n is an integer of 3 or 4, and pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof, which are useful as antianxious substances.
