Aerosols such as a carbon black containing smoke are subjected to an auto-preseparation by passing the aerosol or smoke through loose particles (17) collected and accumulated and only thereafter passing the aerosol or smoke through a separator such as a filter bag (10). This changes the characteristic of the aerosol in either reducing the total content of solids or increasing the average particle size of the solids in the aerosol or achieving both of these features. Thereby the load on the downstream separator and the capacity of the separator, e.g. a carbon black filter house, is substantially reduced. |
