A polyamide acid obtained by reacting 2,3,5-tricarboxycyclopentaneacetic acid or its anhydride with a diamine in a solvent has good stability in solution, good workability and excellent storage stability. The polyimide obtained by heating such a polyamide acid has excellent heat resistance, mechanical properties, electrical properties and chemical resistance.
