<p>PURPOSE:To prevent a malfunction due to the effect of water vapor in relation to the detection of the deformation of each of the leading and trailing ends of a steel stock arising in rolling, by a method wherein analog steel plate image signals are quantized to obtain a frequency distribution of generation of the quantized levels for a plurality of scans, which is then compared with a reference distribution. CONSTITUTION:A video signal of the image of a steel plate 1 corresponding to the intensity of light which is a function of the temperature of the steel plate 1 can be obtained from the output of an amplifier 4. The video signal is also fed into a quantizing circuit 10. A generation frequency detecting circuit 11 once stores quantized signals for the number of times of scans including a predetermined area from the leading end of the steel plate 1 in order to smooth the shape of the leading end, and counts the number of generation of the quantized signals of the same level calculated by a predetermined number of times of scans at a time to prepare a frequency distribution. A judging circuit 12 makes a comparison between the frequency distribution obtained in detecting the leading and trailing ends of the steel plate 1 and the stored reference distribution about the position of a quantized level L2 showing the largest number of generation, the area ratio between the right and left of the level L2 as a center, and the area of the entire distribution, thereby to generate a signal representative of the existance of water vapor and deliver the signal to a cutter controller 9.</p> |
