An apparatus for separating hydrogen from a gaseous mixture which comprises an inlet chamber and a diffused gas chamber said chambers being separated by a non-porous H 2 -permeable membrane which is supported by a metal mesh composite structure. The supporting mesh structure comprises a 16 to 32 mesh screen having 30- 60% open area, a coarse mesh screen and optionally a fine mesh screen, the fine or the medium (16-32) mesh screen being adjacent the membrane. The supporting screen may be a dimpled metal plate having openings therein or a woven metal screen which is made of stainless steel and coated with ceramic or pre-oxidised to provide a weld-resistant coating. A laterally perforated honeycomb structive may be used as a support whilst a number of layers of coarse mesh may be welded or wired together to form a support. The membrane may be made of Pt, Pd or alloys thereof. In Fig. 3, H 2 containing gas enters chamber 31 at 37 through steel ring 38 and is distributed throughout chamber 31 by baffles 46 (such as those described in Specification 1, 032, 132). H 2 diffuses through Pd membranes 33 which are supported by woven metal mesh screens 52, 53, 54 and 56, and leaves by outlet 41 is steel ring 39. The end plates 34 and 36 are held by bolts and the rings are sealed by copper gaskets 42, 43, and 44. Gasket 43 is feathered so that it will not tear the surface of membrane 33 whilst the woven screen 56 next to the membrane has its edges turned away from the membrane and also has a flattened surface achieved by rolling. The woven metal screens may be of specified mesh sizes and arranged in a specified series. It is advantageous to roll the screens to remove any sharp edges which would produce cracking in the membrane. . |
