Polyvinyl alcohol complex compounds are prepared by reacting polyvinyl alcohol with complexing agents. The complexing is advantageously carried out in an alcoholic medium. It is particularly successful if an alcoholic solution of a polyvinyl ester is first mixed with a complexing agent in alcoholic solution, and the polyvinyl ester is then subjected to alcoholysis in the homogeneous phase in the presence of a catalyst. The polyvinyl alcohol complex compounds are suitable as binders and thickeners for sizes, in particular in the paper industry.
