The invention provides cationic compounds of the formula (I) (I) in which R denotes alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, phenylalkyl, or phenoxyalkyl, R' denotes alkyl, hydroxyalkyl,benzyl, or allyl and X(-) denotes a colorless anion, a process for their manufacture and their use. The compounds of the invention can be used for brightening organic materials such as cotton and synthetic fibers.
