PURPOSE:To attain easy recovery of volume index, by copying a volume index provided in a storage medium to an area different from the area where the volume index on the storage medium is accommodated. CONSTITUTION:In initializing a direct access storage device (DASD) 1 through the control of a service program, a primary volume index (VTOC) 3 is provided and a primary VTOC index 14 is written. In this case, secondary VTOC 21 and primary VTOC index 22 are set at the same time. When data sets 5,6- are formed with a data managing program, data set control blocks (DSCB) 15, 16- to control them are written in the primary VTOC 3. In this case, the DSCB is written in the secondary VTOC 21 at the same time. The same content as that of the primary VTOC 3 is always stored in the secondary VTOC 21. |
