PURPOSE:To prepare ethylene glycol from a synthetic gas in high yield, by reacting carbon monoxide with hydrogen in the presence of at least one of phosphoric acid derivatives consisting of phosphoric acid, phosphates and phosphoric esters as a co-catalyst and Rh, Ru, Ir, etc. as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Carbon monoxide is reacted with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst containing at least one metallic element selected from Group VIII in the periodic table, preferably, Rh, Ru or Ir, most preferably Rh, in the liquid phase to prepare ethylene glycol. In the process, at least one of phosphoric acid derivatives consisting of phosphoric acid, phosphates, e.g. lithium dihydrogenphosphate or sodium dihydrogenphosphate, and phosphoric esters, e.g. triphenylphosphate or tri-n-butyl phosphate, is present in the reaction system as a co-catalyst. USE:A raw material for polyester fibers and components in antifreezes. |
