A hydrogen diffusion membrane for selective separation of hydrogen from a hydrogen-containing mixture consists according to the invention of a copper- or silver-saturated, non-porous, tantalum- and/or niobium-based material which is coated, at least on the side brought into contact with the hydrogen-containing mixture, with a palladium/copper or palladium/silver alloy layer, and has a three-layer structure of the main membrane material with an internal interlayer of a melt containing an alkali metal hydride or alkaline earth metal hydride.
