<p>A local area network communications system for a plurality of subscribers has distributed network control and provides random access capability. Each subscriber (130, 230, 330, 430) is connected to a transmission medium (100) via a respective access unit (120, 220, 320, 420). Each access unit contains a control unit (121), and network control is progressively transferred from one control unit to the next in a cyclical manner without the need for centralized control. When a particular control unit has network control, it provides the logical connection between its subscriber and the transmission medium if communication with another subscriber is requested.</p> |
