The invention relates to an optical resonator having a high Fresnel number, whose mirrors are constructed to have a large area, one of the two or both mirror surfaces having a two-dimensional periodic structure, and smaller regions of the mirror surface being constructed in a translationally symmetrical manner with respect to specific displacements within a plane at right angles to the resonator axis, and, in consequence, a uniform intensity distribution being ensured over the entire resonator cross-section and, in addition, producing high coherence of the radiation and little divergence of the radiation which is coupled out.
