PURPOSE:To improve a driving characteristic including the restart of an engine by stopping the drive of an auxiliary fuel pump if the lowering of an intake pipe pressure is due to an engine stall, when said intake pipe pressure is lowered and said auxiliary fuel pump is to be driven for accelerating. CONSTITUTION:During the operation of an engine 1, a map for determining the operating condition of an auxiliary fuel pump 29 based on the outputs of a water temp. sensor 39, an engine speed sensor 43, and a negative pressure sensor 45, etc., is set by an ECU 54. Then, after calculating the increasing quantity of an auxiliary fuel on accelerating for controlling the fuel pump 29, corresponding to the rapid acceleration, rapid deceleration, or gentle acceleration of the engine 1, it is judged whether the engine 1 is stalled or not based on the engine speed. And, in this case, when the intake pipe pressure is lowered and the engine is to be accelerated, if it is judged that the lowering of the intake pipe pressure is due to engine stall, the drive of the auxiliary fuel pump 29 is stopped, to stabilize the operating characteristic afterward.
