The invention deals with a rope drum construction which enables any run-on and run-off speed between 0 and a maximum speed as well as constant or variable starting acceleration or run-off retardation to be obtained in the simplest manner and at constant angular velocity. This result is achieved by staggering the centres of rotation of various rope-drum parts or individual sheaves. Normally, starting speeds of 0, on account of the regulation that the smallest rope-layer diameter is to exceed 10 times the rope diameter, cannot be reached in normal stepped drums. The invention shows ways in which the movement can start at zero speed by eccentric staggering E of the run-on and run-off part (1, 3) relative to the main part (2) of the rope drum while maintaining the 10d regulation. By the use of an Archimedean, logarithmic or hyperbolic spiral between eccentric initial rope layer and rope layer for maximum speed, any run-on or run-off characteristic from 0 is possible.
