A counter electrode for an electrochromic display device comprising a collector and an active material contacting the collector, the collector comprising a metal having a valveeffect and the active material comprising a substance which reversibly oxidises at a potential lower than the oxidation potential of the collector. Electrochromic display devices with these counter electrodes have a long and stable working life.
