PURPOSE:To provide a fuel cell having an excellent holding property of phosphoric acid by constructing a phosphoric acid holding matrix with a material at least comprising a phosphoric acid resistant metal oxide and a phosphate binder. CONSTITUTION:After a specified amount of complex metal oxide and a specified amount of metal oxide are mixed, or a specified concentration of metal salt solution is mixed to a specified amount of complex metal oxide, phosphoric acid is added to those mixtures. Phosphoric acid is added by the amount enough to convert the metal oxide to phosphate and moreover to exist as free phosphoric acid in a matrix. This free phosphoric acid acts as an electrolyte. The desirable amount of free phosphoric acid is 40-80wt% of the complex metal oxide. After phosphoric acid is mixed, the mixture is heated at 100-250 deg.C to complete the reaction indicating in the formulas (1) and (2), and by-products are removed. By this process, an electrolyte holding matrix having adequate viscosity is obtained. |
