Pharmaceutical compsns. for preventing or arresting diabetic complications (cataracts, neuropathy, nephropathy and/or retinopathy) contain an aldose-reductase-inhibiting amt. of 5-fluoro-2-methyl-1-((4- (methylthio)phenyl) methylene)- 1H-indene-3-acetic acid (I) or 5-fluoro-2-methyl-1 ((4-(methylsulphonyl)phenyl)methylene) -1H-indene-3-acetic acid (II) or their salts with (in)organic bases. (I) and (II) are potent aldose reductase inhibitors previously known only as antiinflammatory, antipyretic and analgesic agents.
