The apparatus includes a cylinder(17) & piston(23) with a piston rod member(11) which projects outwardly from the cylinder. A restricting valve(67) is arranged between a chamber(25a) of the cylinder & a hydraulic passage(87) connected with a hydraulic pump(85). An adjusting member is arranged in the piston rod member to be adjustably positioned along the axis. A regulating valve(79) is provided for restricting the flow of hydraulic fluid from the first chamber is response to changes of pressure & the hydraulic passage. By the apparatus, the stroke length of a piston can be adjusted or stopped.
