ROLLING STAND

A rolling mill stand comprises two vertical side frames in the form of windows, consisting of a pair of uprights joined by top and bottom lintels. Within these slide blocks contg. a pair of work rolls, with back-up rolls above and below. In the mid-section of the uprights, projections into the window opening butt against the lower back-up roll slide when raised to its highest position. Shafts set in sockets, in the lower sill, provide elastic buffers for the slide to butt against in its lowest position. The clearance between the slide and the projections can be adjusted by the insertion of pairs of keys. By varying the position of the lower back-up roll slide block, i.e. either held against the projections by hydraulic pressure cylinders, or resting on the buffers on the lower lintel, two different conditions of rigidity can be obtained when the rolling mill is in operation. Max. rigidity occurs in the first, reduced rigidity in the second. This is useful where a single stand mill has to deal with different thicknesses of material.
