In a typewriter or similar machine which can be driven locally in the off-line mode or via a remote-control line in the on-line mode, there is the possibility of changing the margin boundary, the pitch or the line spacing. In local mode, the change takes place by means of control elements which the user places in the respectively desired position along a scale. In the on-line mode, the adjustment to the conditions of a text to be received takes place in accordance with adjustment instructions transmitted over the remote-control line before the text. The user is informed as to the adjustment state prevailing in the on-line mode by means of various displays and/or by automatic adjustment of the control elements on the basis of the adjustment instructions fed via a remote-control line. <IMAGE>
