Waste disposal apparatus comprises an electrically-driven comminutor 6, 7, 8 to receive waste material, e.g. disposable hypodermic syringes, having a water inlet 13 and outlet 11, a filter unit 23 to receive the discharge, retain the comminuted material and allow passage of the water. The water is received in a liquid storage tank 22, and is recirculated to the water inlet by a pump 28. As described, the comminutor comprises a rotor 9 and ring of teeth 10, and the filter unit comprises a disposable mesh bag 26. The apparatus further comprises a lid switch 33 and a time switch 35, which permits operation of the comminutor and pump only for a pre-set time interval after closing the lid. Disinfectant &c. may be applied to the water from a holder 36. In a modification, the water tank and filter bag may be in separate containers connected by a flexible hose.
