A lifting platform 11 for use in loading vehicles into an aircraft is connected by X-links 12 to a base 14 in such a manner that when one end of the descending platform engages a fixed abutment 18, the other end continues to descend, substantially to ground level. At one end of the device, the links 12 have fixed pivotal connections 13 to the platform 11 and to the base 14 and at the other end of the device the pivots 15 are slidably mounted in guides 16. The pivotal connection 13 between the platform and the corresponding link 12 is adapted to disengage when the descending platform engages the abutment 18. Continued folding of the links 12 causes the opposite end of the platform to descend to the position 11<SP>1</SP> in which a hinged ramp 19 contacts the ground. The device may be hydraulically actuated and an automatic lock may be provided at the disengageable connection 13.
