The invention provides a device for monitoring the wear of refractory linings. Hitherto such monitoring was carried out with thermoelectric test sensors such as thermocouples and a satisfactory picture of the state of a fairly large area of the refractory lining was only possible with a very large number of them. The invention eliminates this difficulty by using a plate which has high thermal conductivity, in particular a copper plate, and which extends parallel to the plane of wear of the refractory lining and is connected to the latter in a thermally conducting manner. This copper plate supports the thermoelectric test sensors, that is to say the thermocouples or temperature-measuring resistors, so that each of their values provides information about a very large surface region in which the plate having high thermal conductivity is thermally exposed.
