Method and device for stimulating excitable nerve and muscle structures and the like, at least two electrode pairs being applied in a predeterminable arrangement on the skin of the person to be treated and medium-frequency electrical treatment currents being supplied via these electrode pairs at frequencies which are so different that they form effective stimulation beats in the superposed areas. By a contrary change in the amplitude of the supplied medium-frequency currents, the stimulation sites can be displaced statically and dynamically. For selective detection of the total area demarcated by the electrode arrangement by a corresponding change in the location and direction of the maximum stimulant effect, the drive of the electrodes is switched over without changing their geometrical position between an orthogonal electrode pair and at least one further parallel electrode pair. The mutual dependence of the change in amplitudes for displacement of the location of stimulation corresponds to previously determined characteristic lines.
