PURPOSE:To improve the reading accuracy and to decrease the reading time, by providing a symbol designating the types of characters at the outside of a character frame and determining a dictionary to be used according to the instruction of the symbol. CONSTITUTION:A photoelectric conversion section 1 reads a manuscript form and the pattern is registrated 2. The symbols of a type designation frame of characters at the outside of a character frame is detected 4 at each character and given to a discrimination section 5, and also characteristics are picked up 3 from the pattern at the inside of the character frame at the same time and given to the section 5. In the section 5, the symbol is compared with a character symbol corresponding to one of disctionaries such as Hiragana (Japanese syllabary) dictionary 7, Katakana (square form of Japanese syllabary) dictionary 8, alphanumeric and symbol dictionary 9 and Kanji (Chinese character) dictionary 10 and the result is outputted 6. When no designation is done for the types of characters, all the dictionaries are used. Thus, the reading time can be reduced and the reading accuracy can be improved. |
