The purification installation with one preliminary clarification stage is intended to purify mechanically waste waters. It comprises an activation stage, with at least one activation tank, and at least one final settling stage with one or a plurality of final settling tanks. A compressed air source supplies the activation stage with compressed air. In such purification installation, the activation and final settling tanks are provided with a flat bottom (2), flat inner side walls (19, 20), flat inner front walls (21, 22) and/or diagonal flat panels (11) connecting the inner side walls and forming at least one rigid and dismountable square container (1). Passage orifices (23, 26) are provided on the front walls and on the panels through which waste waters flowing in the longitudinal direction of the container arrive to the activation tanks and then to the final settling tanks, and finally come out therefrom. All the tanks and containers have, lengthwise, the same rectangular cross-section and comprise, as installed elements, aeration units, for example sludge siphons actuated by means of compressed air, of which the length and the diagonal are a multiple of a base grid which also determines the base surface of the tanks and containers. The particular shape and arrangement of the installed elements, frames and clamping parts allow to adapt and enlarge, in a modular way, the purification installation according to needs.
