A magnetic tape recorder includes control means for controlling the writing of digital data in NRZI, PE and GCR formats. A PROM 86 contains a set of mini-programs each of which controls the writing of a different portion (e.g. beginning of tape marker, record, check characters, end of field) of one of the formats at a certain bit density. PROM instruction register is pre- loaded with a mini-program start address, and counter 84 then sequences through the program. The counter 84 also addresses a PROM 92, containing repeat numbers which are fed to a down register 94, holding the current instruction for corresponding times to determine e.g. the length of a gap or the number of 1's in an identification burst. <IMAGE> |
