New diphenyl ether oxime ethers and diphenyl ether oxime esters are suitable for the pre- and post-emergence selective control of weeds in stocks of crop plants. The new active substances are diphenyl ether oxime ethers and diphenyl ether oxime esters of the formula <IMAGE> in which R1 denotes hydrogen, halogen, CF3, CN or NO2, R2 denotes hydrogen, halogen or NO2, X denotes preferably CN or else hydrogen, NO2, halogen, lower alkyl or alkanoyl or is a carboxylate or amide radical, and Q denotes an organic radical, preferably an ester radical <IMAGE> in which R is C1-C6 alkyl and R3 is hydrogen or methyl. R1 is preferably CF3 or chlorine in the para position and R2 is preferably hydrogen, or NO2 or chlorine in the ortho position.
