The process comprises the following three operations in succession: the separation of free ammonia in a column (2) for entrainment with steam, fixation of the dissolved ammonium nitrate on ion exchange resins (3) and regeneration of the latter using nitric and ammoniacal solutions and concentration of the regenerated solutions by evaporation in a conventional evaporator (4). The free ammonia recovered is fixed with nitric acid in (6) and recycled to manufacture. Since the aqueous effluents treated with the ion exchange resins contain only a very small quantity of ammonium ions, they can be discharged into the environment.
