When drinks bottles are sterilised following the principle of immersion sterilisation using sulphur dioxide and/or sulphuric acid, the residual sulphur dioxide situated in the bottles is removed by blowing out with sterile air, which has been preheated if necessary, e.g. with sterile compressed air; in this process, the bottles can be guided in an upside down position and/or can be previously flushed out with acid, e.g. filtered sulphuric acid.
