A sync. electric motor (1) has the shaft mechanically coupled to the shaft of a sync. alternator (2). The rotor windings of the motor are connected to the output of an energy converter (3) powered from an external source. The alternator output is connected to a speed generator (4) which contains a phase sensitive rectifier (5). This is connected to the feedback input of a control signal generator (6). A speed selector (7) has a reference signal transmitter (8) connected to the control signal generator and also controls the frequency of the energy converter by a continuous voltage directly reportional to frequency. This enables the alternator frequency to be controlled by the motor speed.
