CONTINUOUS MANUFACTURE OF MULTIPLE FIBER OF QUARTZ GLASS FOR OPTICAL USE

PURPOSE:To improve the flexibility and strength of a fiber by drawing a multiple fiber having a specified outside diameter from a bundle of many optical fiber strands of quartz glass and by coating the multiple fiber with an adhesive org. polymer layer so as to satisfy specified conditions. CONSTITUTION:A bundle of many fiber strands of quartz glass for optical use is drawn to form a multiple fiber having 1-5mm. outside diameter. On the clean multiple fiber immediately after the drawing, an adhesive org. polymer layer having >=100mum thickness, >=3% elongation and >=1,000kg/cm<2> tensile elastic modulus is formed by applying org. polymer varnish such as epoxy-acrylic vanish 3031. The preferred varnish is of ultraviolet-curring type having 10<3>- 5X10<4>cps viscosity at room temp., and it is preferable that the prescribed thickness is provided by a single application.
