The invention relates to a method for detecting the arc melting state. The method is carried out by using a control parameter that is dependent on the non-linearity of the arc, and by comparing this parameter with reference values that were obtained by analysis of previous melting processes. The control parameter consists according to the invention, of the arc's resistance, that is determined at at least two points that lie on a section of the curve that corresponds to the interval of time when the arc was produced and at the maximum instantaneous value of the current.
