The axial-piston two-or four-stroke engine incorporates double-acting pistons (15) working between two combustion spaces (11,25), the connecting rod (30) passing through one. The inner cylinder head can have an air inlet distributor valve turning in synchronism with the engine crankshaft, while the air inlet ports (23) can be situated at regular intervals round the cylinders and are uncovered near the bottom dead-centre position, the exhaust ports (22) being above them. The air delivered by the lower parts of the pistons can be stored in a single chamber through which the cylinders pass, thus flowing into the latter through the ports directly. The exhaust ports can likewise discharge into a single chamber.
