The invention provides a heat exchanger core which operates by means of cross counterflow and which is constructed from plates and splitters, the plates being spaced from one another and arranged above one another in such a way that they define between themselves at least two flow paths of which one extends transversely over the core from one side thereof to the opposite side, this heat exchanger being characterised in that the other flow path (7) comprises at least one U-shaped part which, departing from a third side, extends transverse to the first flow path (6) and is constrained to turn around within the region of the plates (2) and to return to the third side, in that a slit or a gap (8) is provided between the limbs of the U-shaped part and constructed in the plates (2), one flow path (6) extending from one side to the other side of the core transversely over the slit (8), and devices being provided which prevent fluid in the other flow path (7) from flowing into the slit (8). <IMAGE>
