PURPOSE:To improve the traveling performance and safety of a vehicle by controlling gear change stages in accordance with a road condition around said vehicle, in addition to a traveling condition, from a road information previously housed in a vehicle loaded navigation device. CONSTITUTION:When a vehicle is traveling, an information on road, e.g., between an area around the present position of the vehicle and the destination, and the like, is indicated from a navigation device 50, to guide the travel to the destination. On the way of this travel, the gear change stages of an automatic transmission 3 are automatically changed by a control means 210 in accordance with vehicle traveling conditions detected by a traveling condition detecting means 204. Also, when the control pattern of the gear change stages set by the control means 210 is changed by a changing means 211 in accordance with the present position detected by a present position detecting device 65 from a road information, i.e., the road condition around the vehicle, e.g., when traveling on a curve or on a low mu road of an unpaved road, etc., the gear change is prohibited. Thereby, the traveling performance and safety of a vehicle can be improved. |
