An apparatus for cutting flat material which is spread out in one or more layers over a supporting surface makes use of a cutting appliance having a reciprocating cutting knife which can be moved in two coordinate directions in the plane of the supporting surface to enable the cutting knife to follow a desired intersection line relative to the flat material. The cutting knife has a front cutting edge which performs the actual cutting operation with a cutting action. During the cutting operation, a mechanical device inside the apparatus causes knife oscillation about the reciprocating axis synchronously with the reciprocating strokes of the knife. <IMAGE>
