An ink jet printer includes circuitry for controlling the alignment and deflection of droplets produced by nozzles and changed by charging and deflection electrodes which control the trajectory of droplets. A charging signal is generated for each droplet by control circuitry and routed to the appropriate charging electrode. The charging signal is adjusted to take into account nozzle aim as well as the operating characteristics of the charging and/or deflection circuitry for that nozzle. The preferred adjustment includes application of a gain and/or an offset factor to uncompensated charging signals. These gain and offset factors are periodically updated to compensate for changes in nozzle directionality and circuitry gain with time.
