PURPOSE:To recognize input data regardless of the number of strokes by sampling the input data at equal position intervals without reference to whether a pen is turned on or off, and using data on direction between two sampling points as a direction pattern. CONSTITUTION:To a character recognition device which inputs handwritten characters on online basis, holographs of the handwritten characters are inputted as position information through a tablet part 81. A starting and ending terminal detection part 82 detects the start 92 and end 93 of the writing of one character from said position information, and a conversion part 85 at some specified intervals without reference to whether a pen is turned on or off and detects data on moving directions between those sampling points 41 as direction patterns 51. In a standard pattern storage part 88, standard character patterns corresponding to prescribed characters are stored previously and a pattern matching part 87 matches the character pattern of said inputted handwritten character with the standard character patterns to discriminate the kind of the inputted character. |
