A heating apparatus comprises a helically wound coil (52) of an electrically conductive tubular member for conducting an electrical current and for conducting a coolant therethrough, disposed in a protective tube with a fiber optic temperature sensing strand extending through the coil (52) and having a tip adjacent a radial window for sensing the temperature of a tube (64) into which the apparatus is inserted for heating thereof.
