A process and apparatus are disclosed for converting organic material, especially organic waste matter, into a liquid composition useful as a fuel, which is suitable for the operation of diesel and other i.c. engines. The apparatus consists of a feedstock charging unit 11 which introduces solid finely-divided organic matter into a sealable first reactor 14, where gasification occurs and an autogenous pressure is built up until a valve 16 is opened and the first gas mixture passes to a first catalytic treatment zone 18 and from there to a second catalytic treatment zone 26, the gas product from which is then subjected to a silent electric discharge in an electrostatic energy field unit 29 prior to undergoing reduction to normal pressure and temperature in a condenser 32. The resultant product is a liquid composition. In a preferred embodiment, operation with an initial solid feedstock alternates with operation with a gaseous feedstock (Figure 3b) which produces an additional quantity of liquid product, prior to resumed operation with a further solid feedstock charge. |
